I bet gas is killing your pocket as well. But if you follow couple of tricks not only you can save on gas but you can have better transmission life of your engine.
1) If you not in a hurry then don’t floor the gas paddle right away when you start driving ...
2) When standing on red light & once the light goes green do not floor the gas let the engine get in motion it will not only save gas but increase the life of your transmission belt.
3) Follow the posted speed limit, but every car can give better milage between 40 - 65 MPH, Its the green zone of engine where it’s not pushing too hard or too slow.
If you follow these tricks you can at least add 1 mile per gallon.

How about synthetic oil; my new Subaru just saw a 3 MPG increase upon changing over to Synthetic. I use Napa synthetic as it is cheaper than a lot of name brand oils and it is made by Ashland Oil Company (Valvoline).

"transmission belt" you must have A CVT ? there's no helping them . even ford jumped ship and now installs a 6 speed (btw, it was more of a chain than a belt)

Common sense. Mentioned numerous times before. Never hurts to hear them again.
