1- No. You don't waste anything you enjoy using. 2- Usually I go for 30 minutes or 25 miles, and sometimes it's just a detour from my normal route. There's a toll road in my city that goes nowhere but it has a higher limit of 75mph so I do that sometimes just so I can go 80 and not get a ticket. 3- The longest I've driven for fun was probably 180 miles, it was a huge detour.

P.S.
Last time I checked..."boredom" wasn't caused by a vehicles ability to produce any particular efficiency...e.i. 40 mpgs...

I only go to places I need to and since I like to drive...Anytime I drive is enough "Fun"...while I'm taking care of a need...not a want which doesn't get me what I need...

I typically take a driving vacation. Typically combine a snowboard trip with a long distance drive. Fly into Denver and then drive to Steamboat Springs or Jackson Hole to ride. Or drop into Reno, ride at Tahoe and then drive to northern CA for fun and to explore. As a kid I used to do cross country car trips, either solo or with a bud. Across the US or CAnada with my old jalopy. Fun.

Love to drive and I'm usually good for an extra 100 miles a week just going nowhere. What I love about driving around here in Florida is you can speed with only a minor concern about getting a ticket. So not only do I drive for fun I do a lot of speeding too. I bought my car to enjoy it not get 40 mpg and be bored to tears.

I am a "Sunday driver". I take Mom out every Sunday I can (90 plus). We go to church and then out for ride. She loves it and I specifically wanted a fuel efficient vehicle so I wouldn't feel constrained in doing something she enjoys!
I average 50MPG a year and I take public transportation to work and walk about a mile most of the time between station. I car pool with my wife 3 - 4 days a week to train station

Whether you can drive around for fun depends on your circumstances. If you are unemployed or one of the "working poor" with small mouths to feed and rent to pay, you can't afford to waste gas. Luckily, I am not in that situation.
I drive around Tampa and in the rural areas around it on nice days just to be out in the sun and fresh air. It may be for 30 min. or one hour. I don't buy anything because I take my own beverages and snacks. So the cost of my excursion is limited to gas. It is cheaper than the mall or retail stores.

I don't drive around for fun. If I am on the road it is to go to the store, work, doctors office or for a specific purpose.

I do, with friends though. I figure you're wasting just as much fuel sitting at home with all the house lights on and the T.V and whatnot on, than taking a spin and having some fun.

I don't feel guilty about the gas I'm wasting, it's entertainment. And a lot of the time I'd rather drive around than watch movies. Driving is more fun when you don't have to be somewhere at a certain time.
I've done several hundred miles. I think the longest I've driven for the heck of it was a day trip from SFBA to Reno,NV/Lake Tahoe,CA and back in one day, did not stop in Tahoe for long (just took a few pictures and left.)

I don't drive around for enjoyment anymore due to prices and time. BUT, I'll choose to take the scenic route occassionally, which adds 5-10 minutes to my drive. I just slow down 10 mph, look around, and enjoy.

it is not about guilty. it is about being careful how you use it when your driving. plan them carefully and drive in fuel saving mode .

1. Do I feel guilty? No, my vehicles get decent fuel mileage and there are worse ways to relax. 2. Depends on the day, how much relaxation is needed and how much other traffic is out. 3. ~240 miles round trip. But that was years ago when gas was a LOT cheaper. Now its more like 40-50 miles round trip because that's how far it is to the beach!

I don't feel guilty at all if we decide to go on a day trip or something like that. There isn't any gas shortage.
