When it comes to new trucks Ford seems to be ahead of the competition . A turbocharged v6 can look pretty impressive compared to others v8s. If you can afford a new truck and if you don't need anything bigger than a 1/2 ton pickup I would go with Fords ecoboost truck. I wish they could bring these trucks to the U.S market.

My only regret about the truck I bought is that I didn't wait another 6 months or so. Mine is a 2010 with the 5.4 V-8. If I waited a few months I could have got the 2011 with either the 5.0 V-8 or the ecoboost V-6. Both have more power and both get better mileage. But I still think his best choice overall would be the F150. They ride good for a truck. They are quiet inside while you are going down the road. The crew cab can fit 3 (large) adults in the back seat with ease. It will tow better the the Tacoma (mid size truck) and get the same or better gas mileage.

No more weight than this would be a Toyota Tacoma 4 wheel drive V6 would handle that sufficiently and with ease. 16 mpg city and about 22 mpg highway.

I'm hoping to get some good ideas for trucks too. I'm going to be needing to buy something in the next year.

Why buy a New truck when the value of it drops like a rock the moment you drive it off the lot.

Why pay that much more for a diesel and then have to pay a higher price for fuel?

Or you could get a cummins(5.9) like I got. You can put as many kayaks as you need and as much gear as you want with as many people as you want and I bet their isn't a truck out their that could beat its mpg. I also carry heavy 5th wheel loads too which is fine to in case you want to be able to pull a camper.

I still think the new F150 with the Ecoboost V-6 would be the best bet.

Toyota Tacoma, especially the 4 wheel drive V6 will tow just about anything and most are already set up to tow with a receiver hitch, wiring and extra coolant on the radiator.

I would think a 4 or 6 cylinder small truck would be sufficient. We have a trailer and a 6 kayak rack stand that we transport the kayaks on. On our block we have 3 houses that get together a couple times yearly and go kayaking for a day. Our neighbor built it for us all to go kayaking.

A Ranger may be nice, but when you have a truck that is less then full size, and start adding any kind of weight (kayaks, people, gear) at one point it gets to where that smaller truck is less fuel efficient then the full size. So going back to what I said about the F150 Ecoboost. It has the towing ability of a full size truck with the V-8 but it gets the economy of the V-6.

I'm guessing the kayak trailer with kayaks probably weighs about as much as a small fishing boat( not 100% sure so don't bite my ear off) so a nice ford ranger should get the job done.

Lowest mpg or Highest? The new F150 Ecoboost is getting good mileage for a full size truck. And it will handle a kayak trailer without trying. And with the crew cab 5 adults is a easy fit!

Most places that rent trailers or moving trucks have a chart that shows what vehicles can tow what vehicles or trailers by weight. An RV store might be able to help with that too.

You'll need to be more specific with the trailer weight (tongue and loaded weight) because that will determine minimum requirements.

@PatAZ: What's with the hate? It's a legitimate question for this forum, though I do hope rbutterw is also doing other research, the forums here are a valid place to get some practical, real world data.

The size and type of trailer make a difference. It depends on what will fit your needs. I agree with others, do some research yourself.
