A gas boycott will never work. The only thing that could work would be NOT DRIVING.
If you boycott on a Monday, you'll just fill up on Sunday or Tuesday instead. How is that changing anything?
Not driving would reduce the amount of gas you use. Thus, that would work. You could also try public transportation, car pooling, biking, or walking.

I have a long post here on the site why gas boycotts cannot succeed, but for those who won't take the five minutes, here is the key issue:
Gasoline dealers and refiners have no way to lower your price.
Sure, both could work for free -- charging just their true bottom line cost, not making a penny on trillions of dollars of effort -- and you would pay $3.85 a gallon instead of $4.00.
So, it won't work. Do something real to lower your costs. Lower your personal use. "Boycotting" is a waste of time and breath.

khettinger:
Boycotts can and do work. However, to work they have to have clearly identified objectives, and have objectives that the party being boycotted can meet, or can be expected to meet in order for the boycotters to be satisfied enough to either have their demands met or to end their boycott.
Boycotters, when conducting their boycott, either have to be willing to accept alternatives to what was done by the party being boycotted, or what was being consumed. That is, if you don't like the policies of one plumbing company, use another one; or if you're boycotting lettuce, use cabbage. There has to be some sacrifice on the part of the people being boycotted.
So far, however, very few people here who call for a boycott have ever said what the objective of their boycott is other than an ambiguous "lower prices". They don't say anything about what happens if the oil companies cannot, because of costs of crude or other expenses, or because of world wide demand for the same product by others who would be willing to pay more for the product, if the oil companies cannot meet the "demand" of the boycotters.
Just once I'd like to see those calling for a boycott say what their actual, realistic and achievable, demand is that needs to be met in order for them to "call off the boycott."
But, yes, boycotts can and do work. Just not the way people here call for them.

No, Papa56, if people stuck together and stayed home all weekend, it would do nothing. Oil is a worldwide commodity. A couple of days of lower use, followed by normal use, is a gnat on the elephant of consumption. Staying home on a holiday weekend does nothing for prices.

Debrastorch,
Do you even know the meaning of the term price gouging? Look it up, because it's not what most relatively new people who post here think it is. And yes, we do know Cindy's suggestion would NEVER work.
She's been a member of this site for over six years and she's only accumulated an amount of points that could easily be earned in a week if she only bothered to participate in the site, primarily by posting gas prices. That would be of real value to the other members.

Deb: Do you think that enough people on this website go to gas stations that gouge to begin with, let alone think that their not doing anything on one weekend will make any difference?
But, just wondering, do you really know of any gas stations that gouge? Can you identify even one? Not gas stations that are high priced, or higher priced than other gas stations, but even one gas station that gouges?

Really TJC? You have been on these boards for three years and decide to trot out the tired old boycott a single brand scam? Here, I bumped this up for you. Might help a bit.

cindym - how hard are the oil companies going to be hurting? They may get a belly ache from laughing their butts off at all the stupid people who think they are going to be hurt by not buying gas for one day, two days or even three or more days.
Perhaps an class in economics will help you some.

"Let's start boycotting a certain brand for a month or two, beginning with Speedway."
.....
I'm pretty sure they won't miss you...most people with hairball schemes like this purchase less than $5-$10 at a time anyway as they never have enough change in their pocket to fill a tank...BTW this utterly silly notion has been beat to death and never amounted to anything.
You'd be lucky to get six of your cohorts to join you if they were family members let alone the masses which you couldn't hope to get a consensus on which brand to go after and this little tiny whiny forum is more than likely one of a million other little tiny whiny forums scattered across cyberspace.
Besides, we'll be on a 30 day trip in the RV to Florida and up the east coast to Savannah GA starting the week before Memorial Day.

I am suprised that cindym has yet to return to this topic she created almost 2 months ago. If she does return I would like to hear more about how this boycott will hurt the oil companies. Is the plan to overwhelm then with sales in the days before and after Memorial Day?

I like captain daves train of thought.Being captain`s we were trained to be prepaired and not speculate. And we had to prove we were 100% american.Next election remember all of the politions that helped us get to this point how many thought like true americans and how many thought like blood suckers.Oh yes if we cant come to a decision here in IN we will go th ILL till it blowes over.

You know there was a time that worked.Your government has set the stage for a collaps of our economy.Let me give you two things to think about.1 the deep water horizon spill. I was at one time a U.S. merchant marine officer 5 over seas skimmers stood poised to clean up the mess and protect our golf cost.Where was your fearless learder ?.But that give King Obama right to stop all drilling in the golf and one of the largest pockets of oil was found there.Guess who drilled there Mexico.Where was our senat and congress.2 drive around the country see whats owned by over sees intrest. You try to open a gas station in Indiana can`t be done, funny scores of middle eastren people can.And just for kicks check and see who runs and hold the lease on Indiana`s toll road.I pray i`m wrong but time will tell.

Your idea would not hurt the oil companies one bit. They wouldn't even notice.
Can I cook on Memorial day? I cook with propane, which is delivered by a local oil company. I also heat my house with propane, if its cold can I heat my house to keep my family warm?
When you go to the store, do you take your own bags or use their plastic bags? Plastic Bags = oil companies.
I hope you don't think that oil companies just make gas and other fuel.

Sorry but after we return back home in mid April from wintering at our property here in AZ in our 45 ft Class A coach, we'll be taking our annual 30 trip down to Tampa, Miami, Ft lauderdale, Daytona Beach, Orlando and back home again...being retired is truly hard duty but then somebody has do it!

JD, I think we got April 1 and Memorial Day last year. Plus may 15th, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They worked so well we get to see it happen again this year.
