Many folks get their oil changed regularly, but when was the last time you had your transmission fluid checked or replaced? You may say that you have a sealed transmission, and that replacing the fluid is not possible- but it is possible!

While some vehicles feature transmission fluid dipsticks to check your fluid level, some do not, also called "sealed transmissions". Both can be serviced and should be regularly. Transmission fluid is the lifeblood of your car, just as much as engine oil, which some people forget. Either way, to avoid having your transmission prematurely fail, I would strongly suggest having your fluid level and unit checked to ensure thousands of miles of motoring.

While you're at it, some transmissions...

Depending on how you drive, change the transmission fluid at least every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.

Make sure your transmission is serviced by a qualified person. I have had (2 times) major transmission problems after having the fluid changed--on fairly new cars.

Anybody that needs to be reminded to service their transmission shouldn't be driving.

my third read of daily news is almost always one of these oldies but goodies. I wouldn't know a blog from a blob; I'm amused by the self righteous members who get so upset. find a way around it and smile; aren't you happy?: don't you get paid while you're doing thing waiting for your next job to be ready to haul; or the next ""real"" work hits your inbox?

of course, it's a PD BLOG... funny that it somehow ends up under "recent NEWS" on the front page.. seems there's any where from 1 to 5 BLOGS - that's not what I call NEWS... alas,... it's GB employees... guess they're above all the rest of us and all the rules.

dabayer: yea, but some vehicles DO need it every 3,000 - diesel trucks that tow heavy loads are on example.

Agree with "tomog',

" Check all fluids according to the owners manual, including the transmission."

Save your money. Oil changes every 3,000 miles are OVERKILL. Most new cars need it every 5 - 7.5k . See your manual.

I at least just follow the manufacturers service schedule, if not more frequently. I have a friend with an '04 model truck with over 100K on the odometer who has never had the transmission fluid and filter changed.(!)
