U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today launches a comprehensive strategy designed to address the growing and dangerous practice of using handheld cell phones behind the wheel.

It's called the "Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving" and it outlines concrete steps that legislators, safety organizations, insurance companies and families can take to reduce the risk created by distracted driving.

Finally, LaHood has acknowledged that government efforts alone have failed to change driver behavior where 'distracted driving' is concerned.

"Personal responsibility for putting down that cell phone is a good first step, but we need everyone to do their part, whether it's passing stronger laws, educating our...

Unfortunatley, here in VA the cell phone and texting laws do not apply to the police... Which makes NO sense to me.

Sounds like it's doomed for failure. I see cops all the time talking on cells and even saw one texting. If the cops don't follow the rules...

I agree. Many states already make it illegal to drive and talk on the cell phone but what about all the other distractions like women putting on makeup, reading paper, texting, and many other things. Peoples lives are at stake so pull over for a minute to do it than killing or hurting someone.

Yeah, this is another issue that isn't going to be fixed with legislation, it's an attitude adjustment that's needed

Get more police officers on the roads. It's pathetic driving around the country and not seeing idiots pulled over for distracted driving.

You can't hide sloppy driving caused by distractions. If someone was born with two brains, four sets of arms & hands and several sets of eyes maybe they can do a good job of driving while texting (or reading a newspaper, or swatting the kids in the back seat, or putting on makeup, etc.), but all those OTHER people will display telltale signs of their inattentive driving.

It's easy to spot. It should be easy to issue citations for it.

Most of what car manufacturers have been working on is a car that will notice when the driver is either distracted or falling asleep. They have cameras that watch your eye movements, and if you blink too much or look away from the road the car alerts you

papou: talking on the phone yesterday, texting today, who-knows-what tomorrow.

Solution would be to instill a notion of responsibility for one's action, but in today's i-centric world, that's not going to happen, I'm afraid.

Hobby, that might be one way.

Perhaps we ought to have taught personal responsibility for one's actions to the last two generations? Then this might never have arisen.

Would somebody tell all those bureaucratic government experts from Washington DC to cry their bleeding hearts out somewhere else.

Maybe they should travel a bit to some of the third world countries and live there a few years: try Nigeria, for example!

If law enforcement is not going to enforce the laws already on the books, why waste time with more legislation, training, public service spots, etc.

If people would only pay attention while driving then we wouldn't need to waste money on the US Dept of Transportation and rules for things that could be corrected if people would just exercise a little common sense.

a manditory 1 year prison sentance (prison not jail)
with zero tolerance would end this practice quickly.
