Emmasdad, I don't want this to get into a religious mudfight, but to say "there is no proof" is quite dismissive, and, well, rather simplistic. Setting aside what He meant and did, here is more proof of Jesus' life and ministry than there is to Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Buddha, Mohammed, and even Shakespeare.
Chuck Colson noted that many people think Jesus' life, death, and resurrection was nothing but a concoction created by some religious conspirators. However, they all suffered torture and execution (or exile--John), and none of them recanted. Colson said he was in the epicenter of a conspiracy (the Watergate break-in), and it wasn't long before members started selling out.
None of Jesus' followers did.
Freedom27, what that says is that Christ was born in --or BEFORE--4 BC. The outer limit is 8 BC, or, better, 6 BC.

I read a Christian Christmas book where the author dated Christ's birth as 4 BC because that was when Herod the King died.

Thanks traffic cop - That is interesting, especially in view of the fact that Jesus fulfilled all four of the Hebrew spring feasts of Leviticus 23, and many Jewish rabbis believe that Christ will return on Rosh Hashana, (the feast of Trumpets) and in rapid succession will fulfill the other two fall feasts. It is not a stretch to correlate Jesus' earthly life to the feasts (convocations) that the Lord calls His.

A Christmas meditation:
If you're discussing history, you have to deal with the "primary documents," especially those that are contemporaneous with the actual event. So for the life of Christ, that means the Gospels, with Luke giving the greatest detail. He was a doctor/historian who interviewed, researched, and collected material from those who knew Him--including His mother, Mary (Luke 1.1-4).
A careful analysis of his precise account shows that Christ was born on, or about, December 25~ We learn that Gabriel visited the priest Zacharias, who was serving in the Temple on Yom Kipor (Luke 1.5, 8-11). He was in "the 8th Order" (of priestly rotation) (I Chron. 24.10). This would have been early to mid-October. Gabriel appeared to him and told him that his barren wife Elizabeth would soon conceive (Luke 1.8-13).
So, considering a woman's menstrual cycle, their son, John the Baptist, was conceived at the end of October. Mary conceived "of the Holy Ghost" * during Elizabeth's 6th month (Luke 1.36), around March 31. A baby's gestation is 270 days, so, counting from March 31, we get the birthday of Jesus Christ on December 25!
How appropriate that the Lord, born "to save His people from their sins" (Mat. 1.21c), was probably conceived on the Hebrew Day of Atonement!
It is a secular myth that Christians adopted an already existing pagan holiday. Telesphorus, 2nd bishop of Rome (129-138) spoke of Dec. 25 celebrations, as did Theophilus, bishop of Caesarea, same period, and Hippolytus who identified the 25th as the Lord's birthday in 200 A.D.
Emperor Aurelian established the 25th as the official solstice in 275 A.D., and the Romans did not designate Dec. 25 a holiday ("Birth of the Unconquered Sun" until 362 A.D! See? It was the ROMANS who adopted a CHRISTIAN holiday!
So! We can realistically and responsibly celebrate December 25 as the actual birthday of our Lord and Savior, Jesus of Nazareth!
*It's worth noting, in passing, that Christ's miraculous conception differs radically from the pagan religions, which typically have some "god" coming down from the skies to breed with a mortal woman. In Matthew 1.20, Gabriel told Joseph " that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit," meaning "this holy/spiritual thing." Thus: a fully God/fully man who experienced our suffering and mortality yet has the power of Divinity to save us!
A merry Christmas to you all, along with a healthy and prosperous New Year!
