UK shale fracking not risking quakes, dirty water

Reuters -- LONDON, June 29 (Reuters) - Fracturing shale rock formations to extract trapped gas, also known as shale gas fracking, is unlikely to cause big earthquakes or contaminate drinking water in Britain, science and engineering bodies said in a report on Friday.

Shale gas extraction came under fire in Britain last year when the government stopped fracking activity at a site in Blackpool after tremors were measured in the area.

Developers predict trillions of cubic feet reserves could be lying under British soil which could help it reduce dependence on imports.

Shale gas has already transformed the U.S. gas market, where prices have dropped to 10-year lows and companies are gearing up to export excess fuel.

An expert report commissioned by the government recommended in April that fracking cou

If done properly fracking is a lot safer than a Nuclear energy plant. Even If both meet all standards, if anything goes wrong, the Nuclear waste or meltdown is going to be far worse than some leakage from a fracking site. If I had to choose between the two to have energy, I'd recommend opting for the fracking.

All I know is that from all the reading that I have done on fracking, I'm not sure I would want it done in my back yard and take the chance of ruining my well.

To dieselgus1 who asks "and the constantly reported tremors in fracking areas, where there were no real history of them before, i suppose thats coincidence?"
========================
Please cite these constantly reported tremors so we can discuss. Basic engineering does not necessarily apply to geology.

you can never be 100% sure that the gas will not get into the water supply or that the chemicals will either. It HAS HAPPENED in Texas, Oklahoma, and many other states...they just get paid off to not report it

Fracking does force methane gas into drinking water.

Can you do this with your tap water?

to drpeppertx who said it does not make sense, think again. what do you think happens when you break things apart, even on a microscale? its removing support, however minute. basic engineering. the more support you remove, the more susceptible you are to breakage. not that its definitely going to cause it, ill give you that, but everything adds up. and the constantly reported tremors in fracking areas, where there were no real history of them before, i suppose thats coincidence?

It all depends on the skill level of the company doing the work. If they practice good methods then all will be well.

Quakes no. Dirty water, possible. Depends on company doing the fracking and how responsible they are.

I'm still skeptical. Fracking seems such an invasive, destructive method of extracting gas. This article describes evidence that the physical side-effects of fracking are minimal, "if it's done right", but I am not convinced.

TelsaOR, great post!!

Over a million fracs have been completed and there was no groundwater contamination. This was in a 2009 poll conducted by the Ground Water Protection Council. This was confirmed in a paper presented by Geoscience Professor Terry Engelder of the Pennsylvania State University in October 2010 in the Dallas Shale Gas Water Initiative Conference.
