It seems that a lot of radio-active material naturally occurs in coal. And that is released when it is burned as fuel.

I strongly favor promotion of nuclear fuel. While it may not be the ultimate answer for powering over-the-ground transportation, it's a better answer than gasoline. Attention to finding safe ways to tap this resource could be a key to economic prosperity by putting people to work here and ultimately selling whatever technology we develop to the rest of the world. Other countries, most notably China, are also working on this problem. China has so many engineers that I'd give them the edge going forward unless our attitude changes dramatically.

I work in the business and it is as safe as the operators who operate the plant. The two most serious accidents in nuclear power happened because of personal error. As long as we continue to train and license operators and monitor their performance, nuclear will continue to be safe. And the waste... well as soon as all the politicians stop playing their games, we can bury the waste in a safe place.

Its CHEAP, there is a high initial cost, but compared to the amount of power it produces it's dirt cheap. It's very clean compared to coal, oil, or even natural gas. It's safe! 5 mile island suffered a PARTIAL meltdown and released an unknown quantity of radiation into the air, scientists who studied the area estimate that it was no more than having a chest x-ray. Chernobyl is the only exception, but think about it people. Soviet Union, 1986, safety... I don't think so. The Chernobyl reactor was extremely unsafe and outdated even by the standards of that day. I'm all for wind and solar power, but I'm even more for NOT being screwed over by OPEC so I say go nuclear power!!

Until more alternative sources of energy become viable, nuclear will help fill the energy need gap.

Also, natural uranium (at today's prices) has a static reach (proven resource divided by current consumption) of less than 50 years. This number CAnnot increase if policies supported a signifiCAnt expansion of nuclear generation. Of course, this limit could be overcome by "breeding" fuel, but who is allowed to "bread" fuel (breeding operations will also always allow production of weapons grade plutonium) -- only NATO countries, Russia, China, Iran, N. Korea? Finally, nuclear is not the lowest cost method of generating electricity, that myth had been purported by the industry but CAnnot be supported from current financial numbers published (like all industries, cost for disposition and consequences of a potential accident should be included in the price of electricity generated)

It's a lot cheaper, and a lot safer than 30 years ago. Japan who is paranoid about nuclear anything - uses it as a matter of course for much of their power.
