Warm clothes. The car is most likely to die when it is -40 (-40 is same in F or C)

The most important one has been omitted from the list - fire extinguisher. There is nothing more serious than a fire in your car, considering that it is fuelled by a very flammable liquid. I had a car ignite one time under the hood due to an electrical short. Fortunately, I was at home and was able to use one of the fire extinguishers in the house to put out the fire. Very scary situation since the car was in the garage. Since then, we always carry one of the small extinguishers with us in any car we drive.

Consider carrying a cell phone or radio, emergency signals, tools and supplies. Items appropriate for your travels may include these items: flash light road flares, flag or emergency reflectors/triangles tow rope / tow chain pocket knife / multi-tool / leatherman / box cutter / hatchet hand tools / tool kit with WD-40 and duct tape shovel - small or collapsible bottled water for drinking & refilling the windshield washer or radiator blanket or sleeping bag, space blanket or plastic sheeting / tarp & parachute cord / light rope and bungee cords snack food stuff (jerky & energy bars....not junk food) jumper cables for batteries tire pressure gauge, air compressor/tire pump/ tire-inflater, a 4-way lug wrench is very handy a tire repair kit of the Green Slime type spare tire - don't leave home without it! fuel can & funnel fire extinguisher electrical tape for wrapping leaking radiator hose until you can get to desirable repair facility. Tip: If a coolant hose leaks, let the engine cool, use tape to make a repair, refill the radiator, and loosen the radiator cap to avoid pressure build-up.
Drive with skill and care.

In my travels throughout Alaska, I routinely carry all of these: spare tire & jack, warning flares, cell phone, flashlight, a tow rope & basic tools, including jumper cables. On road trips, I take survival gear, a small gas can and a gallon water jug. Most of these are used to help others. With all-wheel drive, I don't need chains any more; if they're necessary, I shouldn't be there then.
I find the warning flares are most important (since I always carry a cell phone and call in mishaps & traffic problems). I've often encountered a stalled car or wreck in a dangerous place. Dropping a road flare reduces the risk of further damage. It would've been nice for the good Samaritan who stopped to help out on a foggy, icy bridge; oncoming cars drove him to jump over the concrete rail of the bridge; he didn't realize it was an unobstructed fall to the iceberg-filled Knik river. We lost a good man. A flare would've saved him and protected others.

Not only is it good to carry a cell phone, many like mine have a built in small LED flashlight. That kills two things with one tool.
I used to have a nice little portable mini tool set but I accidentally left it in my old car when I traded it in. I have been forever searching for something portable I can stow in the trunk but have never found anything as versatile and compact as what I had. I miss having a screwdriver in the car — it's needed to get at one of the headlamps (but not the other, silly German engineering).
I've also got jumper cables in the car but… I'm embarrassed to admit I wouldn't know how to use them correctly. I've been shown a bunch of times but always forget what to connect first, second, etc.

ə i carry several of these, and all are very important. i chose “communications” (cell phone and laptop computer) but also have personal survival gear (food, lights, can opener, heat source, soap, shampoo, and similar things as well as a few blankets for cold-weather travel), a jump-starting kit, tools, and maps. if i intend to play in a chess tourney, i also include my chess set. spare tire and concomitant equipment are not emergency gear; they are part of the car. ə

Tire stuff (spare tire/ jacks/ chains. But, I also have a cell phone as well, which worked for me the last time that I had a flat tire the day after Thanksgiving in 2008. And at around 5:30 in the morning here.

A cell phone is on me (these days) if I'm driving or not.
Things that happened to me while driving: - Flat tire, - put on the spare - Dead battery - use the jumper cables, worse case call AAA - Stuck on ice - in winter I carry a shovel
I also carry a cheap multi-tool set I got on sale at an auto parts store The worse that ever happened was blowing an engine. Then, after calling AAA, I actually used my smartphone to find the closest Enterprise and rent a car to proceed.

My choice is tools. For me tools includes a ratchet wrench with the correct socket and a long bar that fits on the wrench for leverage when removing lug nuts. Also in the tool kit is a basic variety of pliers, screwdrivers and an assortment of basic tools. The cell phone is good to have along but many areas I go into don't have coverage.

I have a little bit of a lot of these selections.
In may auto, there is a spare tire and jack (which also always comes with the vehicle when purchased), jumper cable, flashlight, first aid kit, cell phone, jackknife, and portable shovel.
