UK shale fracking not risking quakes, dirty water

Reuters -- LONDON, June 29 (Reuters) - Fracturing shale rock formations to extract trapped gas, also known as shale gas fracking, is unlikely to cause big earthquakes or contaminate drinking water in Britain, science and engineering bodies said in a report on Friday.

Shale gas extraction came under fire in Britain last year when the government stopped fracking activity at a site in Blackpool after tremors were measured in the area.

Developers predict trillions of cubic feet reserves could be lying under British soil which could help it reduce dependence on imports.

Shale gas has already transformed the U.S. gas market, where prices have dropped to 10-year lows and companies are gearing up to export excess fuel.

An expert report commissioned by the government recommended in April that fracking cou

Another in a growing line of studies showing the safety of hydraulic fracturing. But the science denial crowd will overlook the science and continue to promote fear. Yelling "the water's on fire etc.".

There is a huge amount of deceiving information spouted out to the public about hydraulic fracturing, a decades-old technology. Those who spread this misinformation are mostly preying on the public's fears, with an ultimate goal of forcing state governments to succumb to that fear and prevent or even ban hydraulic fracturing. We need to make sure that the discussion is productive, and that any rules are legitimately conceived. Fact must be sEPArated from fiction.

The most common claim talking point is that hydraulic fracturing contaminates ground water. This is baseless. Have you ever noticed that the critics who make that claim never provide concrete evidence? The reason for their omission? It is obvious why. After being used more than 1.2 million times there have been no confirmed cases of hydraulic fracturing contaminating water. None. Never. Ever.

As EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in April of 2012, "In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater."

The three "smoking gun" cases that the anti-shale zealots were sinking their teeth into have proven false or based on very poor science. See Pavillion WY, Dimoch, PA, and Parker County, TX.

Oh and the "evil Halliburton Loophole" talking point! LOL, what a joke. This is the errant claim born out of the yellow journalism of "gasland", a proven fraudulent film by Josh Fox, that hydraulic fracturing is "exempt" from the Safe Drinking Water Act, thanks to an energy bill passed by Congress in 2005. The truth??? SDWA has been the law of the land for nearly 40 years, and at no point has it ever covered hydraulic fracturing. Why??? States already tightly and effectively regulate the process.

How can an industry be exempt from something that never covered you in the first place? But you hear this falsehood talking point most every time the subject comes up.

It is important to rely on facts and science, not fear-mongering talking points.

Sadly, since soda claims to have me on ignore, it comes out that soda blindly claims Murdoch should have gotten tingles when his people illegally hacked a murdered girls phone.

And had constables selling out info on victims and others for cash....

Funny how the man who's news organization proclaims to be the most "patriotic", is owned by an individual who RENOUNCED his Australian citizenship, just so he could meet U.S. requirements to own a major news organization.

Hypocrisy knows no bounds....

The UK report calls for more regulations for ground water safety. The fracking companies in the US operate with secret injection formulates hiding under trade "secrets".

There are way to many questions left unanswered by a poor story from Reuters....but the poor quality itself may be the fault of the report itself.. and not Reuters...

Sorry charlie..... (or soda).....

Very little facts in the story.

I like facts. I know you do not.

The "study" had a very short period. Where were the source materials from?

Was it a simple analysis given to "facts" submitted by the actual companies? Who or which companies/firms compiled the originals facts used?

Unlike you soda, I base my opinions on reality, logic and facts...not PR or talking points.

I will leave you to your efforts at spreading broad calumny at NHLiveFree and others..... but so far, the story is very questionable......

The Brits certainly deserve anything they get after centuries of Imperialism. Perhaps it shall be payback for turning their back on the Irish during the good old days of the "Famine". They have always been superb at 'denial' and permitting 'cartels' to wreak havoc around the world under the guise of "civilization". So go at it and please don't call on Canada of the USA for safe drinking water in 20 years.

so, when you type (or copy and paste) "...certainly suggest that the earthquakes observed in the Eola Field could have possibly..." are you really saying anything? REALLLY??

The conclusion from an extensive look at OK seismicity:

Conclusions
Determining whether or not earthquakes have been induced in most portions of the stable continent is problematic, because of our poor knowledge of historical earthquakes, earthquake processes and the long recurrence intervals for earthquakes in the stable continent. In addition understanding fluid flow and pressure diffusion in the unique geology and structures of an area poses real and significant challenges. The strong spatial and temporal correlations to the hydraulic--fracturing in Picket Unit B Well 4--18 certainly suggest that the earthquakes observed in the Eola Field could have possibly been triggered by this activity. Simply because the earthquakes fit a simple pore pressure diffusion model does not indicate that this is the physical process that caused these earthquakes. The number of historical earthquakes in the area and uncertainties in hypocenter locations make it impossible to determine with a high degree of certainty whether or not hydraulic--fracturing induced these earthquakes.
Whether or not the earthquakes in the Eola Field were triggered by hydraulic-- fracturing these were small earthquakes with only one local resident having reported feeling them. While the societal impact of understanding whether or not small earthquakes may have been caused by hydraulic--fracturing may be small, it could potentially help us learn more about subsurface properties such as stresses at depth, strength of faults, fluid flow, pressure diffusion, and long term fault and earthquake behaviors of the stable continent. It may also be possible to identify what criteria may affect the likelihood of anthropogenically induced earthquakes and provide oil and gas operators the ability to minimize any adverse affects as suggested by Shapiro et al. (2007).
